An Assassins Creed Theory? A Science based theory? A Science based Assassins Creed Theory? Oh man is this feeling like some good old classic Game Theory again
the glory days have returned
Getting back to basics
And it only took a paid sponsorship to make it happen.
No joke I’m here for it
Yes!!! 💯
I really did miss these science theories, so glad they are back
Still don't know why they fired Austin
@ Pretty sure Austin said it was a mutual separation
@@brad6817 Go on seperate ways thing, not really anything big.
@@generalpika2260did he start his own channel?
@ yes it is called “Shoddycast” and i think he made a video talking about why he left
I mean the assassins could be just aiming for exposed areas for armoured enemies. Its not like the armor protects every part, theres always some small area for flexibility and mobility.
Chainmail
Chainmail is a lot easier to pierce than armour tho
Less than you'd think.
That is often just the face. Just eyes even. Not even that on a modern soldier.
@@jasminelyall2700that doesn't make it easy to pierce 😂😂😂
They were it for a reason.
@spacechild120Chainmail is actually more vulnerable to stabs due to the ring shape of the armour & is meant more for slashing damage
Game Theory: "We aren't firing a gun."
Ezio with the Hidden Gun: "Ha-ha, gun go boom."
"Or an arrow"
Arno with this crossbow styled hidden blade: haha arrow go swoosh
If the hidden blade at that speed woulda have done that much damage on the wrist, then the hidden gun would've done so much more. Rest in Pasta, Ezio's hand.
Aaahhh
Or the Kenways:"PISTOLS,PISTOLS, and MORE PISTOLS and FLINTLOCKS!!"
@ yea but they don't seem to have them set on their arm. they hold them.
For your force calculation on the heavy armor, you're assuming that the entire moment of acceleration is coming from the blade's deployment. But if you look at the attack, that isn't what happens. There are three things taking place simultaneously: the blade is deploying, the right arm is moving in to deliver the strike, and the left arm is pulling the target backwards into the strike. Additionally, while the animation doesn't differ on an armored target, it's safe to assume that the assassin would be aiming for a joint in the armor or a spot between plates, such as around the neck. All of this is to say that if a skilled assassin is able to get that close to a target, the armor likely won't save them.
Except for the fact that high quality armor like that wouldn’t have gaps anywhere save for maybe the crotch so they don’t stab their own privates while riding a horse.
Gambeson and Mail Hauberks. Even the neck and underarms would be stab-proof.
Saved me the bother. Nice.
So small thing, i dont think you take into account the force that the person applies with their wrist as well as the extension of the. I feel like they mainly just use the extension as a way of revealing/concealing the blade, they just use it like you would a normal knife. Not to talk bad on this insanely well researched well made video.
But they did talk about that
Yeah at 8 minutes into the video they talk about that
@@novapizzolitto7868 Yes, but it was never put into the calculations. At all. Just handwaved away.
That's exactly how they use the blade. It only springs out and retracts as a way to conceal it. It doesn't actually do the stabbing, that's left to the assassin. He jabs it into their weak points or gaps in the armor or neck and other weak points. If he can't do that, he knocks whatever is blocking it, off first.. In the brute example you can clearly see gaps in the plate armor at the sides.
also the sharpness of the blade
Hooray, more then just mascot horror recaps.
Seriously I'm glad we are getting more actual theories, the theories were getting less intresting as they got more about just recapping stories. I miss the really out there stuff like "Mario is mental" "Companion cubes are full of corpses" "Handsome Jack is the hero" etc.
Yeah sponsored content. Ubisofts try to save the new game. Not that game theory cares about assasins creed knifes
@@dezbo462Not neccesarily true. They could of accepted the sponsorship because of the fact that Tom likes Assassin's Creed as he mentions through out the video that his brother liked it alot. You could counter by saying they could of not accepted the sponsorship and or picked another sponsorship but obviously they accepted the sponsorship wrote a 17 minute video after doing Math, recorded it,edited it and released it. I think at the very least someone might of enjoyed doing something. I just wanna watch a cool video seeing the science of Video games,i don't care if it's sponsored.
It's not really a "recap" if it's a theory on something and sometimes theorising something that wasn't in the Game.
@@dezbo462tries to save the new game???? The new game is good it doesn’t need saving lol
the spring mechanism in the hidden blade isn't used for shooting the blade out to stab, it is only used for extending and retracting the blade. the hidden blade works the same way a switch blade would but mechanism are a bit different. anyone whose own a switch blade knows the springs are usually only strong enough to puncture paper, anything else and it fails, at that point the blade has to be pulled manually until it locks and resets the mechanism.
Agreed. Otherwise, very nice theory and true to form
So you barely paid attention to the theory then? Because they did bring up more than the spring mechanism...
@@homerman76 The majority of the theory was based around the idea that the blade ejecting from the gauntlet propelled by the spring was the force used to puncture an enemy, instead of just a mechanism for storing and deploying the blade. I don't think anyone expects the spring mechanism to be the force behind the act of assassining
@@LenzDaddy No, that was one small part of the theory, he then mentioned the impact of the Assassin own momentum, pointed out the issues about stabbing into plate armor and then noted that the durability of blade itself is actually the biggest problem amongst all of this, at which point he noted that that's because our Assassins are stealth killers not the kind of guys that typically get into full on brawls like the player may choose to be.
@@homerman76 agreed
Look into blage geometry. The thickest part of the blade may have been about 1/3 inch on a blade like this. The rest of the blade tapers to the edge. So you'll have less mass, but also the energy of the puncture is focused at the point. That should effect your calculations.
All that said, I really enjoy how in-depth you go. Keep up the great work!
Eh, it wouldn't really affect the calculations all that much, the blade would carry less weight and ultimately carry about the same amount of force once piercing is accounted, meaning the spring still does about nothing and you still can't really stab through plate armor (stabbing between the gaps would also similarly affect the force calculations because of how you'd have to aim the knife, making for an awkward motion that decreases the force you can apply. Ultimately the point still stands that, when you're going around killing enemies left and right, it only works and the blade only holds up because it's a simulation, whereas the real Assassin would be more stealthy in their approach and aim for moments where the enemy is without armor or is at least in a prime position to stealthily take down through the armor.
@homerman76 That's how you want to argue about my comment? Go try to shove a half inch piece of rebar thru a carcass, then a knife with a blade made for stabbing. The difference is dramatic.
Most of your paragraph, you're talking about things that aren't even related to what I said. I'm going to assume that you're bored and in desperate need of attention. You have this reply, congratulations 😂
Sharpness indeed changes the force requirement for breaking through various materials. Would be interesting to hear the source for force requirements referenced in the video
This seems to be a flawed premise that it's the springs that are delivering the force. This isn't the case, as even in the videos you show, the blade gets deployed, locked into place, and then the assassin plunges the blade into their target using the strength of their arm and a punching-type motion. It's more like a collapsible punching dagger than a spring-powered bolt gun
My understanding of the hidden blade is that the spring is only for extension and retractions of the blade. While the arm is used to push and puncture the target
Also it is unlikely that the assassin used normal iorn it's more likely that they used steel or the standard material for weapons production
yeah, at least Altair did since you can see him actually close his fist to hold the bade in place (except in the "main" trailer, and that one combo finisher where he stabs your mouth from below and then punches you with a right hook cause you weren't dead enough I guess XD)
One must keep in mind, even brutes have gaps in their armor, aim right, and you can cause severe bleeding of an artery as just an example, back then it would be often fatal. Also, the blades don't just spring out, an assassin often springs their hand forward just a little bit when doing silent assassinations. To give their blade the force needed to pierce through the target.
Stabbing there is not an easy task though, especially when you approach from behind and have to stab fast enough to leave you a way to escape. Usually, there is also chainmail and leather underneath to cover those weak spots. While easier to pierce, you still need a lot of force to do it. The assassin will need a lot of training to execute such a maneuver flawlessly, and even this is a gamble considering the layer of chainmail.
@FrostedMike Well, the assassin's played in the games are professionals. The training they go through would most likely also involve knowing where to strike to either avoid, or get through chain mail, without drawing, too much, attention. Besides, chainmail is usually worn by more lightly armored individuals, a brutes armor has no real room for things like that, considering one, they still need to be able to move inside their, and two, adding any more layers would make the suit too hot to stay in for extended periods and make it harder to breath while inside it. Heatstroke and lightheadedness from lack of oxygen, not exactly something you want to happen to a heavy hitter.
@@FrostedMike Correct, it is not an easy task, which is why it's a glaring criticism of most games post the AC2 saga
the only issues are Chainmail and Gambeson, they can and were designed to stop going through or around the plate armor, but put enough force behind the stabby stabby motion and it's feasible to poke those kidneys
Ok, this is normally the type of video I gush over and what makes this channel one of my top subscriptions, however there were a lot of basic oversights in the research (already called out in a lot of comments) and I feel like this deserves a mulligan...
I had a thought that part of the reason the assassin vambrace was so large was not only to flex the assassin's logo, but also to pad most of the force when stabbing with a hidden blade and keep the wrist more aligned, kind of like boxer wraps.
that's honestly pretty logical, I like that
The hidden blade is more akin to a cerimonial weapon really, any use it has is mostly in social stealth. This is why Connor, Basim and Naoe have knives along with their blade, and why you can't parry until you get the bracer in AC2
Edit: Parry WITH THE BLADES.
Wait connor's hidden blade becomes the knife you mentioned. He actively uses the knife in combat because he can deploy it and it comes past his wrist and spins on an axis so he can grip the handle end of his knife
cant you parry with naoe with just her katana?
@@NotMe-vx4vl Edward can still parry even before he gets his hidden blades
In what game that is a thing?
@@IncognitoActivado Connor and Naoe both have a variation of the Hidden Blade that pivots and can be used like a dagger.
Basim just also has a separate dagger.
This is a title I would imagine seeing back in the early MatPat era
Ikr
Been a while, since I watch GT what happened to him?
@@PlatinumCyGirl he basically retired kinda, he's still on like scripting and other things behind the scenes but is no more the host of all the channels
@stillchills Oh wow! It is a lot of stuff and work. I can see why. My favorite theory is the zombie one lol that's what got me into game theorists ☺️
You calculated as though the blades are solid. I’m pretty sure the top half slides into the bottom half, then into the gauntlet. So the mass should be significantly less since the widest part is mostly hollow.
Even if this was accounted for the difference in density therefore mass would be negligible. And the same point they made would hold true
Also they assumed it was a solid slab of iron, not a blade shape, if you try to fit the shape of the blade inside the smallest cuboid possible I'm willing to bet that it would only fill maybe half of the volume. But yeah as the other guy said it wouldn't have made a difference to the outcome
Except that would mean the blade is even more fragile and carries an even weaker force...
You guys forgot one thing, thought ezio is attacking someone in armor he not attacking them directly like the chest where it most protected, he goes for the gaps in-between the armor and uses his force and the weight of his opponent to go through the gaps, small dagger like the hidden blade are designed to pierce the armor gaps, the brute armor all the way up still have the weight that can let the hidden blade get through the armor week point with out putting so much force into the attack
7:20 What about the fact that the assassins dont just stand there and stab them. They use their whole arm to stab them putting even more mass behind the blade.
8:36 are you sure they aren't aiming for the gap of the armor at the back of the head/neck?
That is generally what you do with knives when dealing with armor, not sure why he assumes it was supposed to pierce the armor
Tom is a theorist, not a battle/combat scholar. That being said, it is really annoying that he assumes that. It’s pretty obvious that you should aim for the cracks in the armor and not try to stab through metal.
I don't think that would change the reality of the issue much, the dangers are kind of a "worst case scenario" and it's still not that easy to stab a human, especially in the neck area where muscles tend to be thickest (note that aiming through the gap would end in a situation where you can't apply the same amount of force because of how you'd have to aim and use the blade.
@FrostedMike oh the assassin needs training? Its not an easy task? Well nevermind then, that's a game changer

This is such a nostalgic theory, and I’ve never even played an assassins game! If a sponsor is what it takes to bring back classic science theories then I’m here for it! Great Video
Always assumed the hidden blade was more of a stiletto than a bashing weapon. Didn't make sense when it was being used that way.
0:56 “while the world around us is constantly evolving with unpredictable weather, changing seasons, reactive environments, and a single player battlepass…”
gacha games are just as bad, all battlepass' are, are means to get stuff quicker.
Feels like classic GT with these science focused theories! Keep it up, Tom!
Just as we were talking about in the community about a lack of old school theories that aren't just explicit lore. This is great I hope more of this comes back, outside of just sponsored ones.
Please cover some old games too. Darn it, cover the ancient history of Golden Sun, there is deep stuff to find I promise
Mass of the blade does not matter as there's mass of the arm wielding it that you need to account for, so it really comes down to the spring itself
The mass of the arm has no impact on the force of the spring mechanism, also, they did calculate in the force of arm afterwards. Did you just tune out the rest of the theory?
It still just isn’t the same without MatPat😢
Assassins creed? Science based theory? Good enough, welcome back 2013 Leap of Faith episode
Next theory a nostalgic hangout game
I canvased a 3d printed hidden blade and still saving for it. I can buy it right away on my payday but I have bills to pay. Then you have to release a video about hidden blades. The gods are testing my patience.
Are you trying to buy something preprinted or print it yourself?
@@bordereliteI'm trying to buy something pre-printed. I can't buy the one from a site that sells hidden blades because I don't think they ship to the Philippines. And if they do, it wouldn't be cheap. So I searched for hidden blades in thingiverse then had them commissioned here in Philippines.
Can you make a video about the lore of Blade and Sorcery? It’s full of lore and I really think you’ll enjoy making a theory about it!
the hidden blade is really just a large switch blade on your wrist. I've worked on a few and found that it's spring system isn't strong enough to push of blade into a thing before it locks at full extension. this can't be much different on these. unless the weapon is fully extended before they try to jab it into someone (which does happen in some cases... others not) it probably won't work.
So I recently got into Assassin's Creed(I instantly fell in love)
