The phrasing is "Can I?" the first time and "Hey wanna do that again?" the second time.
Probably niche, but I'd also suggest having it reset back to "can I" in the event they say no for whatever reason. Assuming that's not already in place.

I feel like a year of training with Laura would equal things out physically, no matter what background you chose.
Maybe it can give you an advantage in baseball.
Keep in mind that having an athletic focus isn't just about having a physical head start, but also being a person who is interested in and mentally engaged by training, athletics and working out. Even if one person has just as many training sessions as another, the one who actually *likes* training is going to get so much more out of each one. The same way someone interested in art is gonna learn faster than someone who isn't.
Or how someone who likes to read and learn will get so much more out of an hour of studying compared to laura the person who's fighting to keep their eyes from glazing over 5 minutes into opening the book.

Sure but just because you have this or that scholarship it doesn't mean you have no interest in other stuff.
I hate it when games only allow or encourage min-maxing and hyperfocusing instead of being more well-rounded.
I get wanting your choices to matter but it feels like such an artifical limit.

I don't want the choice in scholarship to be the choice of which 1-dimensional savant you become. Let's strive for 3-dimensional characters.

Well good news, that's what we have in this game!

The game does make certain assumptions, like assuming Null isn't an aimless deadbeat who will go in for a degree they don't care about and then drop out two years later [I'm totally not projecting].

But even if the scholarship establishes a specialization and interest of your Null, there's nothing stopping you from focusing hard in other fields to be well rounded. But people like Jean and Laura, who *are* hyper-specialized in their fields, are gonna be tough to compete with if you're trying to be a jack-of-all. As Laura says "Time spent talking is time not spent licking."

But if you're complaining why you cant be the absolute BEST at everything all at once, forever... Well, you're shit outta luck, only mary and gary sues get to have no flaws. And that's not an artificial limitation, that's basic ass opportunity costs.

Which is the direction im arguing against.

Currently, but I have seen several comments here and on the discord, that want the scholarships to come up in ways that pidgeonhole Nulls personality.

I don't know who you're arguing with here, but it's not me.
Also you probably can do that if you get all the stamina perks.

Alright then, you're saying the things I described about the game are bad, but also that you dont want to be a "power fantasy" guy who is good at everything and has no weaknesses... I genuinely don't know what you're asking for, then.

Either someone misspoke or you misread.

Null's scholarship is just what he's most skilled in. It's not a summarization of his personality.

A Null who is academic minded is more likely to have insight on a mental challenge than he is to be skilled in a physical task.

I honestly don't know of any member not dying at some point in the history of it existing. not to mention how many times Logan has died
Storm's probably the biggest name never to have been killed off (except in alternate timelines or stuff that gets immediately undone due to time-travel and so on because comics). Rachel Grey's another, but she's not as big. Gimmie some time, I could probably come up with a few others, but there's a surprising number who've never actually been killed off long-term.

Are people perceiving the scholarship choice as a (reskinned) class based RPG design choice? eg The wizard/warrior/thief class selection?

Uh. Well, X-23 would be... and Jean reads enough that... Anna Marie is literally named...

Well, they got their character sheets all filled in for when they decide to roll dice and murder goblins I guess.

Clearly musician scholarship is the best option then. We'll be unbalancing the party composition if we're not the bard!

Sped through to the end of Winter today and decided to take advantage of the incredibly convenient and totally not suspicious sale at the mall to buy up ALL the lingerie on offer at X-Treme Intimates, since that's the best opportunity in the game. I have to wonder how my purchases survived incineration via Sentinel, and also what the X-Men must have thought when they came across a very crispy, well-done Null with about three wardrobes worth of women's underwear on his person. How polite of them not to comment.

Anyways, I definitely had enough in my bank account for all those clothes on the purchase screen but apparently the game thought otherwise, which I assume must be down to some minor glitch in how it calculates the sale. Led to this unintentionally funny text exchange after Null's little nap:

Alright, but in the Off Topic thread. Every time I open my mouth here I drag things off topic.
Nah. It's free real estate/community feedback: Putting the devs at further risk for feature creep by suggesting 'D&D game night' with the girls - keeping it mostly text based so that the artists don't have to draw a card game's worth of clothes, poses and backgrounds. Probably more feasible than the card game mini game that folks were talking about months ago from a technical perspective as well- granted that I don't know how well a Magic the Gathering, Hearthstone, Gwent or a Yu-Gi-Oh! can easily function within Ren'Py. At least, I haven't noticed any card games on this site.

Besides, lines about Rogue playing as a rogue write themselves. And, since I figure that these two are the least nerdy of the group, it could be fun trying to persuade Laura and Dazzler to join.

Imagine these girls playing 40k, Laura would play orks, Jean would be Eldar, Rogue would be tyranids, professor X is essentially the emperor so he would play space marines:sneaky:

I understand what you're saying but, the choice isn't a limit. It's a multiplier/advantage:
Screenshot_2024-12-10_11-26-28.png
And if you're like, "You're cheating", I don't have any cheat written for those. It was just A LOT of time spent in the danger room and I constantly have to train if I want to get ahead of Laura.

The scholarships, at least in terms of ranking and points, is just a multiplier, not a cap:
Code:
        def reputation(self):
            reputation = {
                "academic": "n/a",
                "combat": 1.0,
                "social": 0.75,
                "sexual": 0.0}

            if season_day > 13:
                academic_sum = self.History.check("studied", after = day - 13) + self.max_stamina*self.History.check("attended_class", after = day - 13)

                exponent = 0.185

                if self.scholarship == "academic":
                    exponent *= 1.5

                reputation["academic"] = (4.0 - 1.0)*(1.0 - math.exp(-exponent*academic_sum)) + 1.0
If I recall correctly, Laura has a combat advantage. So I have to train like 2~3x as hard as her just to keep ahead. This would pretty much even out if I had picked athletic.

Again, it's not an limit, it's an advantage/multiplier.
